History
The Lazarus brothers launched the brand in New York City with $5,000 in savings just as wristwatches were transitioning from a women’s novelty to a men's mainstream staple following World War I. To compete with established American giants like Hamilton and Elgin, Benrus developed a highly efficient business model: they imported reliable Swiss movements and assembled the timepieces in the United States. This allowed them to offer luxury-adjacent Swiss quality at highly accessible price points for the "common man". After decades of changing ownership, court battles, and trademark disputes, Benrus underwent a major, multimillion-dollar modern revival. Today, the brand is U.S.-owned and retains its historic headquarters in the Manhattan Hippodrome building.
