History
The company was founded in 1913 by the Helbein Brothers. The brand established itself as a household name in the U.S. by offering dependable, mid-range watches during the 1920s and 1930s. William Helbein became a major figure in the American watch industry, serving as the first chair of the American Watch Assemblers Association. During the second world war, Helbros shifted focus to support utilitarian needs, producing rugged, military-style field watches featuring high-contrast luminous dials and shatter-resistant acrylic crystals. The company also actively participated in U.S. War Bond campaigns. In the mid-century, the brand gained widespread popularity for accessible dress and sports watches, utilizing reliable Swiss and European movements (such as Lorsa and PUW calibers). In the 1960s, they introduced innovative models like the Lunar Phase watch, which tracked moon phases alongside the time. In the 1960’s, ownership shifted over time—including an acquisition phase by Elgin in the mid-1960s—and the brand continued producing affordable mechanical and quartz watches into the 1990s.
